Hosts Push Back on Airbnb’s Checkout Chores Ban. The Date Hasn’t Moved.

A week after Airbnb said hosts can no longer require guests to strip beds, wash dishes or take trash out, a host petition has passed 20,000 signatures, some hosts are talking about a boycott, and many say they will hire more cleaning help and raise fees. Airbnb has not changed the policy or the date. It applies to reservations booked from November 20.

The host petition against Airbnb’s new checkout rules

The policy landed on October 21, and the reaction built over the week. A Change.org petition started by a UK host, asking Airbnb to reverse the restriction, had passed 10,000 signatures by October 28 and 20,000 by October 29. Some hosts in forums and comment threads said they would boycott the platform when the rules take effect. More said something quieter and more likely: they would hire more cleaning help and raise rates or cleaning fees to cover it.

Hosts’ main argument, in the petition and the coverage, is that tasks like rinsing dishes are ordinary courtesy rather than a cleaner’s job. One concern raised by hosts with disabilities is that medically necessary precautions now count only as requests guests can ignore, although Airbnb says it will consider exceptions case by case.

Guests and most commentators backed the change. The Boston Globe’s headline was that guests are cheering; Fortune asked whether the rules will win back travelers who left over fees and chore lists.

Has Airbnb changed the checkout rules? No

Nothing, so far. Airbnb’s position is that the change answers guest complaints about unclear and burdensome rules, that hosts can keep setting and updating house rules, and that light requests remain allowed: dishes in the sink, used towels gathered, trash sorted into the indoor bins, the air conditioning switched off. The date is unchanged, and the enforcement is as announced: the listing editor flags wording, flagged listings can show guests an alert, and persistent violations can lose search visibility.

The full policy, the exceptions and the enforcement path are in our earlier story, Airbnb’s new checkout rules.

Hosts raising cleaning fees instead, and what it costs

Raising the cleaning fee is the response most hosts named, and it has a cost of its own. Airbnb’s single host fee is charged on the cleaning fee, so a host who adds $30 to cover an extra half hour of work gives up $4.65 of it, and a fee set well above the local median books fewer nights. One in four hosts have already raised their fee 15% this year, before the chores moved.

The alternative is to make the turnover absorb the work at a flat price, which is what a professional turnover does anyway. A cleaner who prices per turn after a walkthrough is already assuming the guest did nothing.

How a Fluffy turnover handles it

Every Fluffy turnover already strips and bags every bed, washes and puts away dishes left behind and handles the bins, at a flat per-turn rate set after a walkthrough. The rule changes nothing in how we turn a property; it changes what a host can no longer lean on the guest for.

Three weeks to November 20

Whatever happens to the petition, listings are judged against the policy from November 20. Before then:

Rewrite house rules and checkout requests in the new listing editor, and take chore lists out of guidebooks and scheduled messages
Ask your cleaner, in writing, whether stripping beds, dishes and trash are in scope and price
Re-check the cleaning fee against the full turnover and the 15.5% fee on top, with the calculator
Use the same light requests on Vrbo, so the turnover starts from the same place whichever platform the guest booked through

Questions hosts are asking

Has Airbnb delayed or reversed the checkout chores rule?

No. As of October 30, 2026, the policy stands and applies to reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026. Airbnb says hosts can keep setting house rules and that light requests remain allowed.

How many hosts signed the petition against the rule?

More than 20,000 as of October 29, 2026, per The Boston Globe and The New Daily. The petition asks Airbnb to reverse the restriction on asking guests to wash up.

Can hosts raise the cleaning fee to cover the extra work?

Yes, and many say they will. Airbnb’s 15.5% host fee is charged on the cleaning fee too, and a fee far above the local median books fewer nights, so the increase should match what the clean costs rather than a round number.

Will guests still rinse dishes or gather towels?

Hosts can still ask. Putting used dishes in the sink, gathering used towels and sorting trash into the indoor bins are Airbnb’s own examples of reasonable requests. Guests are encouraged to honor requests but are not required to.

What if my cleaner relied on guests stripping the beds?

Ask them, in writing, whether stripping beds, dishes and trash are now in scope and price, and re-time the turn if they were not. A flat per-turn price set after a walkthrough should already assume the guest did nothing.
